The workflow determines when the "to do" lists for specific participants should be changed, when email reminders of overdue actions should be sent, when reporting, budgeting or planning forms should be displayed for input, and when participants should be alerted that their actions are awaiting the completion of tasks by others.

In short, the workflow guides the participants in the input of key financial and substantive communications from the opening of a matter until its completion and closing of the record, or until a change in the character of the matter-type selection has the effect of altering the workflow.
